Enhanced Facial Aftercare: First 48 Hours & What to Avoid for Your Customized Facial
By Restoration Beauty Spa | October 15, 2026
Serving Downtown Silver Spring (Fenton Street / Ellsworth Drive corridor) and nearby neighborhoods including Takoma Park, Hyattsville, Wheaton, Kensington, Chevy Chase, and Bethesda.
A lot of my Silver Spring facial clients tell me they leave feeling relaxed and pleased with the results, and I want you to keep that glow going at home. The single most important rule for the first 48 hours after your Enhanced Facial is simple: keep your skin calm. That means gentle cleansing, no heavy sweating, strict sun protection, and skipping exfoliants and active acids until any redness or sensitivity fully settles, which is usually 24 to 72 hours.
Your first 24 to 48 hours after an Enhanced Facial (do this, skip that)
My Enhanced Facial is a 60-minute upgraded service with cleansing, facial and décolleté massage, exfoliation, extractions as needed, mask, toner, moisturizer, plus a handheld modality that enhances your treatment. Because we’re doing real work on the skin, the goal right after is to protect the barrier and avoid anything that heats you up, irritates you, or pulls moisture out.
48-hour rule of thumb: If it stings, heats you up, or makes you flush, pause it. Go gentle until your skin feels normal again.
Do this (simple, effective)
- Cleanse gently with lukewarm water. Use your hands, not a cleansing brush or scrubby cloth.
- Moisturize with a fragrance-free, non-irritating moisturizer. Hydration supports recovery after exfoliation and extractions.
- Wear SPF every morning. Choose broad-spectrum and reapply if you’re outdoors, even for short stretches.
- Keep it clean. Fresh pillowcase, clean phone screen, and don’t rest your face on your hands.
Skip this (it’s what usually triggers irritation)
- Hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and anything that makes you flush.
- Workouts that cause heavy sweating. If you have to move, keep it light and cool.
- Direct sun and tanning. This matters even more in Downtown Silver Spring when you’re walking between buildings or catching the Metro.
- Active ingredients like retinol, AHAs/BHAs, and vitamin C serums for 72 hours or until sensitivity resolves.
- Picking at congestion. If we did extractions, the skin needs calm time to close and settle.
If you booked around a busy day, keep this part in mind. Enhanced Facial aftercare is easiest when you can follow a low-activity schedule, so I usually suggest planning your appointment near AFI Silver or the Fillmore on Fenton Street on a day you can keep things simple after.
Days 3 to 7: keep the glow, don’t undo your extractions
A lot of people love that an Enhanced Facial feels relaxing and thorough, but the “results” part depends on what you do next. I’ve had clients come in for acne and combination skin concerns and leave super happy with what we cleared during the service. The way you treat your skin the rest of the week helps keep pores calm instead of re-inflamed.
Quick checklist for commuters: Cleanse, moisturize, SPF. Keep a travel SPF if you’re outside midday. Don’t rub your face on scarves, masks, or collars when you’re moving through Downtown Silver Spring.
When you can go back to “normal”
If you’re not sensitive, you can often bring your usual routine back slowly after 72 hours. I like a “one change at a time” approach. Reintroduce one active, then give it a day. If your skin feels tight, itchy, or suddenly bumpy, back off and return to gentle cleansing and moisturizer for a couple days.
Sun and weather are bigger deals than people think
Silver Spring summers get humid, so you may feel tempted to skip moisturizer. Don’t. Go lighter, not zero. In cooler, drying October weather, you’ll usually need a richer layer at night and extra SPF during crisp, sunny days because dryness can make skin feel more reactive.
Products and habits I recommend after a customized facial (no guessing games)
I keep aftercare simple on purpose. Your skin doesn’t need a brand-new 10-step routine after an Enhanced Facial. It needs support.
Cleanser
Gentle, non-foaming or low-foam, fragrance-free. No scrubs, no brushes, no exfoliating pads for the first few days.
Moisturizer
Fragrance-free, barrier-supporting. If you’re acne-prone, keep it lightweight but consistent.
Sunscreen
Broad-spectrum SPF is non-negotiable. If your skin is easily irritated, mineral formulas are often more comfortable. Reapply if you’re outdoors.
And one habit that matters more than people expect: don’t over-clean. If you’re feeling “extra clean” after a facial and start washing more often, you can trigger dryness, then oiliness, then congestion. Keep it steady.
If you’re exploring more regular skincare options, I also keep a simple overview in our facials in Downtown Silver Spring guide.
Redness, tenderness, and “is this normal?” when to reach out to me
Mild redness or a little tenderness can happen, especially if we did extractions. That usually calms down within 24 to 72 hours. What I don’t want you to do is guess in silence. I’m big on explaining what I’m doing and what your skin needs, and that support continues after you leave.
“Sharnika was very professional, knowledgeable, and helpful in discussing my problem areas of my skin and giving me suggestions for continued skincare.”
A recent first-time visitor
Reach out for follow-up guidance if you have prolonged redness that isn’t improving, open sores, or severe discomfort. I’d rather talk you through what’s going on than have you try to “fix it” with random products.
If you’re ready to keep your results building, the Enhanced Facial is $90, and it’s easy to stay consistent when you’re in Downtown Silver Spring or driving in from Wheaton, Kensington, or Bethesda. Call +13019098880 or email spa@restorationbeautyspa.com and I’ll help you choose the right timing for your next customized facial.
If you’re planning your first visit: Start with all skincare services, then save a spot on a lower-activity day so your first 48 hours are easy.
